ZINC

> 2nd-most abundant trace mineral in body after iron — present in every cell.

> required for numerous processes including: [1] gene expression, [2] enzymatic reactions, [3] immune function, [4] protein & DNA synthesis, [5] wound healing, [6] growth and development.

> activity of > 300 enzymes, needed for metabolism, digestion, nerve function etc

> critical for the development and function of immune cells.

> body growth and development due to its role in cell growth and division.

> one enzyme crucial for taste & smell is zinc-dependent=> deficiency reduces ability to taste or smell.

> 80–92 mg daily may reduce the length of the common cold by up to 33%.

> used in hospitals as a treatment for burns, certain ulcers, and other skin injuries.

> collagen synthesis, immune function, and inflammatory response => necessary for proper healing.

> deficiency slows wound healing - 50mg daily significantly reduced diabetic foot ulcer size in 1 study.

> topical and oral zinc supports acne by reducing inflammation, inhibiting the growth of P. acnes bacteria, and suppressing oil gland activity.

> symptoms of mild zinc deficiency include diarrhoea, decreased immunity, thinning hair, impaired taste or smell, dry skin, fertility issues, and impaired wound healing.
