Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD or GERD)

> the reflux of gastric juice (HCl, bile, pepsin) back into the oesophagus. > most common symptom is heartburn. > associated with transient lower oesophageal sphincter (LOS) relaxation episodes and a decreased lower oesophageal sphincter pressure. > often due to low HCl which reduces digestion and leads to fermentation of undigested food => creates gas and increases LOS pressure. > around 20 percent of all adults experience these symptoms on a regular basis.

Risk factors: 1/ obesity / pregnancy => increased intra-abdominal pressure. 2/ hiatus hernia (stomach protrudes through diaphragm into thoracic cavity) 3/ fatty foods (acid in stomach longer) 4/ smoking, alcohol, coffee. Peppermint, tomatoes and chocolate relax the LOS. 5/ Some medications such as calcium channel blockers, nitrates, NSAIDS, diazepam. 6/ stress and anxiety 7/ family history

Nutritionist’s advice may include:

  • Mediterranean diet – high fibre, low fat, high protein

  • bone broths

  • parsley, ginger, fennel

  • berries, melon, apple

  • leafy greens

  • sauerkraut and kimchi

  • avocado, coconut milk

  • avoid trigger foods / drinks

  • chew thoroughly and do not drink while eating

  • do not eat within 3 hrs of bed

  • sleep with head elevated or on LHS.
