Hiatus Hernia

> stomach pushes through an opening in the diaphragm and into the chest.

> symptoms include heartburn, acid reflux or gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

> acid reflux is the backflow of stomach contents into the oesophagus. The feeling of acid reflux is heartburn: a mild burning sensation in the mid-chest.

> many people with hiatal hernia suffer from acid reflux, but the hernia doesn’t seem to directly cause the condition.

> whatever factors contribute to acid reflux (poor diet, inflammation) also contribute to hernias. People with hiatal hernias don't always develop acid reflux.

> common among those with Crohn’s disease.
